This is a fantastic opportunity to be at the heart of work to support the NHSE
Main duties of the job
This role leads the Finance and Planning Business Partnering team which provides dedicated support to the National Director & Director General for Technology, Digital, and Data and their associated leadership team to manage the financial performance of the directorate.
· This includes planning, analysis, forecasting and reporting and the effective and efficient delivery, management and governance of new and existing transformational programmes and live services.
· The team operates in a flexible, matrix structure to ensure the appropriate skills and resources are appropriately deployed as dictated by business need.
Below are the types of skills and experience that we are looking for. Even if you feel you only meet some of the criteria, we encourage you to apply.
Working for our organisation
NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.
Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms — enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.
In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.
If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
We cannot offer visa sponsorship for external candidates.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As Deputy Director for Finance and Planning Business Partnering, Transformation Directorate, the post-holder will report to the Director for Transformation Strategy, Finance, and Delivery, and will work closely with both the Portfolio Office and the Strategy team to collaborate on major initiatives including fiscal events and investment decisions.
This role places the successful candidate at the heart of modernising the NHS, and would suit someone keen to be a part of shifting the NHS to a digital-by-default service model; who can manage the day-to-day accounts and processes while also pursuing a radical agenda to truly transform services; and who can lead and influence not only their team but also the wider leadership community both within and beyond NHS England and DHSC.
