Main duties of the job

Your Role: Substance Misuse Nurse

Lead our substance misuse services and be the driving force behind recovery-focused care in our Category B local prison.

What you'll do:

  • Deliver Opiate Substitution Therapy (OST) – administer methadone, buprenorphine, and Buvidal injections, ensuring safe, effective treatment for patients on OST pathways
  • Drive therapeutic engagement – oversee patients' recovery journeys with a focus on therapeutic engagement, motivation, and progression towards drug-free lives
  • Manage detoxification pathways – support patients stabilizing from illicit drugs and alcohol by managing medications, conducting withdrawal assessments, and addressing complications with clinical expertise
  • Assess new arrivals – see all new patients requiring detox, implement appropriate care plans, and ensure robust monitoring from day one
  • Provide specialist clinical care – conduct bloods, ECGs, and manage blood-borne virus (BBV) screening and treatment for this client group
  • Champion MDT working – collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver holistic, coordinated care
  • Lead quality improvement – complete audits relating to your area of practice and contribute to service development
  • Build partnerships – work alongside external agencies including CGL and prison colleagues to create and sustain a recovery-focused environment

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Level 1 – Adult / General/Mental Health

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of current healthcare issues. Knowledge of clinical governance audit, risk management and quality agenda
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary healthcare team
  • Worked in a complex environment managing deteriorating patients.
  • Understanding and application of confidentiality.
Desirable criteria
  • Experienced of Drug and Alcohol Services
  • RCGP 1 Qualifcation

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Able to work autonomous and part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise and organise own workload and that of other staff.
