Job overview
An outstanding individual is sought to fulfil the role of Deputy Foundation School Director (London Foundation School)
This educational leadership role will involve a wide range of operational functions for the London Foundation School, working in collaboration with the Associate Postgraduate Dean (London Foundation School). The school oversees the planning, recruitment, education, and assessment of all foundation trainees in London. There are currently around 2200 Foundation trainees in London across 5 Integrated Care Systems (ICS).
The role may include curriculum implementation, educational assessments, supporting doctors in training, quality assurance and promoting educational excellence.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Foundation School Director (FSD) will be responsible for the management of one of five regions in London (NWL, NCL, NEL, SWL, SEL), aligned with an ICS. Responsibilities include development of excellent working relationships with the relevant Trusts in the ICS, providing expert support and guidance to the London Foundation Training Committee (FTC); and liaising with the relevant Medical Schools, Health Education London, GP school and Trust Foundation Training Programme Directors, and the General Medical Council (GMC) in the management and quality control of foundation training through the School. The Deputy FSD may take part in national committees and meetings regarding foundation training as required.
In addition, the Deputy FSD will take a Pan London role within the Foundation school, overseeing one of 5 workstreams. These workstreams are Community (including GP), Simulation and Teaching, Support for Less Than Full Time doctors and doctors returning to training after absence, faculty development and International Medical Graduates (IMGs). The workstream will be agreed after discussion with the appointed postholder
Working for our organisation
Our work supports the NHS to deliver high quality services for patients and best value for taxpayers.
Our staff bring expertise across hundreds of specialisms — including clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial — enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.
We lead the NHS in England by:
- Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities
- Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential
- Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
- Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation
- Delivering value for money
Earlier this year, the Government announced that NHS England will gradually merge with the Department of Health and Social Care, leading to full integration. The aim is to create a smaller, more strategic centre that reduces duplication and eliminates waste.
If successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the recruitment process.
