Job overview

The post holder is managerially responsible for Integrated Sexual Health Services, Wakefield, and will play an integral role in developing the operational and strategic service delivery elements.  Required to work with organisational Directors and managers from service delivery partners to ensure the provision of high-quality management and visible operational leadership, to achieve strategic and contractual objectives within Sexual Health Services in the Wakefield District. Efficient use of resources and visibility and accessibility to patients and staff is essential.

 The post holder is responsible for operational contract management and leadership of the service reporting to the Cluster Manager and working with the CQC Registered Manager for Wakefield’s sexual health services and ensure the effective delivery of Sexual Health clinical practice within agreed integrated service specification, organisational principles and allocated resources. This will include the operational and strategic management of clinical and administrative staff within these areas. They will hold joint responsibility for managing stakeholder engagement and organisational change to forge corporate cohesion, unity and integrity: support development of workforce, practice and interventions aligned to service specifications with agreement on core staff competencies and behaviours.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the delivery of organisational specific and collective key performance indicators of the Integrated Sexual Health Service and for the delivery of agreed programmes of development and improvement, thus ensuring that objectives and targets are achieved (local, regional and national).  The organisation works within an increasingly fluid, agile environment, the post holder will be responsible for effective governance driving a more efficient, financial well-managed (this post will be the budget holder) operationally effective organisation. Agreeing recruitments and cost efficiencies under the direction of the Cluster Manager.

The post holder will lead, support and effectively implement change management initiatives to improve service provision through collaboration and joint working with key stakeholders.

As part of the organisation’s senior team you will contribute to the overall operational requirements of the services under the direction of the Cluster Manager and Director of Operations. This will include contributing to senior meetings including SLG, contract meetings, ICGBs and operational meetings and leading/contributing to RCAs, complaints, business planning, tenders, continuity planning and HR processes such as grievances and disciplinaries.  Should it be required, it may include being on an on call/duty manager rota/management cross cover for other SH Sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Head of Service to lead our Sexual Health team in Wakefield. This is a pivotal leadership role, offering the opportunity to shape the future of sexual health provision in the district and contribute to wider public health priorities.

As Head of Service, you will:

Lead the operational and strategic delivery of the Wakefield Integrated Sexual Health Service.
Inspire and support a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including Doctors, health advisors,  nurses, and healthcare support workers, who are all supported by an administrative team.
Drive service innovation, quality improvement, and clinical excellence.
Manage budgets, contracts, and performance frameworks with a focus on sustainability and impact.
Build strong partnerships with commissioners, public health teams, voluntary sector organisations, and service users.
Champion equity, inclusion, and accessibility in service design and delivery.
Represent Spectrum at local and regional forums, contributing to policy development and sector-wide learning.
Has substantial experience in healthcare leadership, ideally within sexual health, public health, or community services.
Demonstrates a deep understanding of sexual health challenges, inequalities, and opportunities for innovation.
Is confident in managing complex services, leading change, and inspiring teams.
Has excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Is passionate about improving access to care and empowering individuals to make informed choices about their sexual health.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development in leadership and management
  • Masters or equivalent level of experience
  • Computer literacy qualification such as ECDL or portfolio evidence
  • Management qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Previous evidence of research and audit in addition studies.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • An ability to work with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Understanding of specialist (level 3) sexual health services and their operational needs.
  • An understanding of the physical health needs of clients with sexual health problems
  • An ability to work with people who use services, carers and the wider community through an effective patient centred approach to care
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Concentration required for analysis writing reports meetings patient assessment interruptions due to service issues
  • Demonstrate an in depth understanding of issues related to sexual health.
  • An ability to work constructively and effectively across agency boundaries.
  • An understanding of key management functions such as HR/Rota/Training etc
  • The ability to prepare, clear, concise and accurate reports
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of primary care systems and procedures
  • An understanding of the local and national sexual health agenda
  • Experienced in clinical governance activity.
