Job overview

To provide clinical sessions within the Integrated Sexual Health service in Wakefield. 

Sexual health services are provided from various sites, delivering care for both contraception and sexually transmitted infections (and associated conditions).  This post will be based at the centre of excellence in Wakefield but may involve travel to surrounding satellite clinics. There will be a requirement to work evenings.  There is no weekend working or on-call commitment with this post.

The applicant will be expected to provide cover for both walk in & wait and booked clinics, including evening sessions as required. The post-holder will be expected to work without direct supervision, as part of a team providing care for patients in accordance with the standards and guidelines set by the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH) and the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). The doctor will also actively promote good sexual health through the provision of health promotion and health education.

Main duties of the job

Responsibility, with medical and nursing colleagues, for the delivery of a comprehensive level 1 - 3 integrated sexual health service for the population of Wakefield.

Follow service guidelines on confidentiality; adhere to the law regarding sexual health advice to those under sixteen years; Follow organisational policy and good practice assessment with regard to safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults following appropriate Spectrum and Safeguarding Board policies

Provide counselling in the event of an unplanned pregnancy and refer to appropriate agencies as necessary,

Deliver care to patients pertaining to their sexual health needs in line with current BASHH/CoSRH guidance.

Assess, advise, prescribe, administer and carry out the full range of contraceptive procedures required by patients, following discussion with the individual as to their contraception choices, in line with CoSRH current guidance.

Where the applicant does not already hold letters of competence (LOC) for insertion of contraceptive implants and intra-uterine devices it is expected that these will be completed within the first 18 months of the post

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree MB ChB Full registration with GMC DCoSRH Loc IUD Loc SDI
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma of GUM

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of ISH/CASH or GUM is essential.
  • 3 years full time post registration training (or its equivalent on a part time or flexible basis).
  • Demonstrates comprehensive patient management within the sexual health care setting
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical judgement and decision making
  • Good understanding of clinical governance and quality outcomes
  • Good understanding of evidence based medicine
  • Comprehensive understanding of the needs of young people in relation to Sexual Health and specifically relating to safeguarding and Fraser Competence
  • Comprehensive understanding of the needs of young people in relation to Sexual Health and specifically relating to safeguarding and Fraser Competence
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in allied specialties e.g. Gynaecology, general practice, dermatology
  • Evidence of ongoing teaching and training
  • Familiarity with Systm1 computer system
  • Experience in delivery of care to people living with HIV
  • Experience with genital skin complaints
  • Audit or published articles
  • Experience of working with young people
