Employer heading
Senior Clinical Fellow Anaesthetics and Medical Education
Senior Clinical Fellow
Job overview
The post holder will undertake clinical duties primarily in the Main theatre and Day Surgery Units together with the Obstetric and Intensive Care Units. The Department needs an experienced, general anaesthetist who can complement the current skill mix.
There is an expectation that some resident Out Of Hours work will be required due to gaps at Registrar and CT rota. This work covers emergency anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia and intensive care together with the supervision of the first on-call anaesthetist. There is a consultant anaesthetist on-call and a consultant on-call for intensive care medicine, both are always available for support at all times.
The post will therefore have an interesting, varied, and stimulating mix of frontline, out of hours (OOH), acute care of patients for general anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia and intensive care medicine as well as daytime elective surgical lists.
The balance of this workload will vary depending of the needs of the department, the frequency of the Out Of Hours shifts will not exceed 1:16. Candidates interested in working part time are encouraged to apply and on-call would be on a pro rata basis.
The department traditionally maintains a high degree of flexibility in service provision, and whilst most anaesthetists have a degree of predictability to their weekly commitments, many do not, and the post holder will be expected to provide flexibility in the timing and clinical nature of their weekly commitment.
Main duties of the job
Anaesthetic and Intensive care clinical work in and out of hours.
Coordination of 4th year medical student acute care module.
Co-ordinating student rotas and weekly tutorials during the weeks when they are on placement with us. They will be present for 25 weeks (5 x 5 week placements) of the year, for which an existing programme is in place. This programme has historically been for 3 week placements and the successful candidate will work alongside the clinical leads (Dr Barr and Dr Morden) to improve this.
