Job overview

The Lead Cancer Nurse will play a crucial role within Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust in terms of improving the outcome and experience of people whose lives are affected by cancer. The post holder will work closely with the Associate Medical Director for Cancer Transformation, Lead Cancer AHP and Cancer Services Manager to oversee, develop and continually improve cancer services across the organisation. 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have professional oversight of the specialist nursing workforce for cancer, ensuring there is equity in provision for cancer patients across the organisation as well as ongoing development of expertise within the clinical teams.

Support the delivery of the Trust's cancer strategy, supporting the delivery of the Personalised Care and Support agenda, as well as lead on the development and roll out of the existing Pre-habilitation programme for cancer patients. The post holder will be required to have a focus on patient experience and engagement, as well as raising the awareness of inequalities in cancer care.

The Lead Cancer Nurse will be required to participate in forums at a regional level across the Integrated Care System and both the Wessex and SWAG Cancer Alliances, to ensure the Trust is in line with best practice and delivering faster diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients in our community. There will be an expectation that the post holder builds strong professional relationships across both cancer alliance systems.

The Lead Cancer Nurse will also be required to lead on submissions to the Quality Surveillance Team Peer Review process and participate in the internal validation process, as well as lead on the response and actions arising from patient experience surveys, including the National Cancer Experience Survey. When Cancer/Cancer Care is referred to in this JD it is referring to Cancer Services, Oncology and Haematology.

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (RN – Level 1) Education to a degree level in relevant subject
  • Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council
  • Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
  • Post Graduate Diploma or MSc in Nursing or equivalent high professional qualifications in nursing/specialist area
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification
  • Evidence of extensive expert professional knowledge supplemented by post registration specialist, managerial & leadership training and continuous professional development
Desirable criteria

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable post registration experience and also experience in relevant specialist, or equivalent clinical environment
