This is an ideal opportunity for an individual with a genuine interest in skin and Dermatology who wishes to start a career in this speciality. Training would be supported through a competency lead framework as the department provides a full range of Dermatology services including nurse led services such as topical treatments, wound management, Phototherapy, PDT, Allergy Patch Testing, support and advice, scalp treatments and lontophoresis. There is chance to gain skills in minor operations and scrubbing alongside the surgeons in Mohs and skin lesion removal. 

There is opportunity to observe and develop in delivering laser services as we work with the laser department. This includes epilatory, red/brown marks, tattoos and working with children. 

Our outpatients department consists of Consultants, Specialist Nurses and nursing staff. There is chance to complete competencies for development and attend study days relevant to Dermatology.  

Main duties of the job

The individual will be accountable for their own Dermatology practice including clinical assessment, history taking, using appropriate diagnostics, as well as monitoring treatments. They will provide a well-developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience. They will act as a professional role model for the Dermatology service  and promote excellence in nursing practice and care through use of evidence, supervision, teaching and support from colleagues.

Essential criteria
  • The post holder will be a first level registered nurse with a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree in Nursing or equivalent level of knowledge.
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Minimum of 12 months post registration experience
  • QCF Assessor Award or NMC approved Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development
  • Experience of taking charge of a ward/department in the absence of a band 6
  • Good analytical skills and ability to recognise deterioration, ability to make judgements on problems requiring investigation and analysis, e.g. assessment of patient condition.
Desirable criteria
  • Plastic Surgery or Dermatology Experience
  • Experience in a minor ops theatre environment
