Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Department

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

The role is for a Senior Clinical Fellow doctor, who has experience in leading shift in the Emergency Department and be sole senior clinician overnight.

The new appointee will be expected to work with and be supported by the existing ED Consultants to undertake clinical work within the department with an emphasis on the more unwell patients or those requiring more complex procedures. This will involve supervising the junior medical staff and assisting ENPs and providing shop floor teaching where appropriate. Overnight the Senior Clinical Fellow doctors will be expected to run the department independently with the ED Consultant on call from
home and assist with juniors’ decision making and to offer advice and support to the Hospital at Night Team (H@NT) when accepting ED referrals. The Trust has Adult/Paediatric Arrest and Trauma Teams.  The Consultants and middle grades will be expected to play the leading role when these teams are called to the ED.

Main duties of the job

Salisbury ED currently has a spacious 3 bedded Resus, 10 bedded Majors,
a Paediatric assessment area as well as a newly built minors department.  There is a dedicated RATT area and an ambulatory area.  The department has just implemented a CDU with further plans for redesigning the current work space. The Department covers a large geographic area and sees over 57,000 new patients per year receiving a full range of Emergency patients, Paediatric patients making up approximately 25% of the total. Salisbury is a designated Trauma Unit linked to University Hospital Southampton as our nearest MTC.
There is an experienced and supportive cohort of nurses with a Band 6 in charge of each shift and 3 ENPs through the day until midnight responsible for the Minors area. The hospital has all DGH specialities including acute medicine based on AMU, paediatrics and daytime interventional cardiology.  Overnight surgical work is covered by a pooled junior doctor rota supported by critical care outreach.  Anaesthetics, medicine, O&G and paediatrics all have registrar presence overnight. Salisbury ED is recognised as one of the top performing ED’s in the region and benchmark in the top 10 nationally against a number of clinical and non-clinical standards  Please see attached job description and person specification for full details of roles and responsibilities
