Job overview

The Preceptorship Co-lead Midwife role promotes an environment within maternity that encourages learning and sustains the personal and professional development of staff. The post will support the ongoing midwifery preceptorship programme for newly qualified and new the the NMC register midwives with clinical, educational and pastoral support. 

Post holder will be expected to work within the maternity duty manager rota

Working hours are flexible to the needs of the service, including shift work and out of hours when required

Main duties of the job

·       Provide individualised situated support in a clinical environment for students, apprentices, return-to practice learners, and early career midwives.

·        Provide, or signpost to, resources that will promote job satisfaction and retention across multiple domains including those related to pastoral care, learning support, and career development.

·    Seek out new and innovative solutions to enhance preceptorship programme outcomes and/or reinvigorate approaches that have demonstrated value and impact in the past.

·   Act as a direct link between the director of midwifery/head of midwifery/chief nurse and students, apprentices, return to practice learners, and early career midwives to inform enhancements in learner and staff experience.

·    Participate in learning activities locally and nationally to enhance the overall objectives of the programme.

·     Working creatively to develop practice and new ways of working, taking the lead in the change management process when appropriate.

·   Facilitating the development of Midwife-led quality improvement initiatives.

·       Critically analysing research related to practice and using research findings to influence and change practice.

·         Supporting members of the team to develop critical analysis skills.

·         Facilitating the development of theory into practice and vice versa.

·       Identify high turnover hotspot areas and work with staff to improve local retention rates.
