Job overview

This post would give an ideal opportunity for a candidate to gain a wide range of oncology experience in a cancer unit setting. The post holder will perform a daily ward round of all oncology inpatients who are admitted to Pembroke Ward. In this role they will be guiding and supporting the CMT1/F2 allocated to the ward. They will also review any outliers and see ward referrals. The post-holder will review telephone advice given by the nurses in the preceding 24 hours (the weekend log will be reviewed on Monday morning). The post holder will then take action if any is required. 

The post-holder is encouraged to discuss all patients with oncology problems with the appropriate oncologist and liaise closely with the medical consultants responsible for oncology inpatients. They will also be responsible for close liaison with the hospital palliative care team (Hospice on site) and the oncology research team.

The post-holder will also assist the consultant oncologists in the provision of outpatient and chemotherapy clinics, together with attendance at relevant MDT meetings.

There will be the opportunity for the post-holder to attend the bi-monthly Regional Training Days for Oncology trainees.

Main duties of the job

Give advice and support on the management of patients and provide a hospital outreach service to key departments e.g. Acute Medical Unit, Emergency Department, Surgical Admissions Unit and wards as required for patients with:

a.    Suspected cancer

b.    The management of chemotherapy related complications including neutropenic sepsis and specific drug related complications

c.    The management of patients with symptoms due to progression of their disease

 

Assess patients attending the Pembroke Suite/Assessment room with cancer and/or treatment-related problems as part of the AOS

Attend MDT meetings as appropriate

Attend clinics and assist in the review of patients and (following training if needed) in prescription of chemotherapy.

Review patients on clinical trials where appropriate.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Evidence of general medical experience
  • A good level of clinical competence
  • MMBS (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 6 months NHS Experience (Observation and clinical attachment alone won't be considered)
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems: demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach
  • Interest in Oncology/Haematology/Palliative care
Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working in Outpatient setting
