Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology

Specialty Doctor

Job overview

This 10 PA Specialty Doctor post is a development to address demands on the service resulting from an increase in workload. It would suit an enthusiastic junior doctor with the relevant ophthalmic experience of at least 2 years and four years post qualification.  It would suit someone keen to consolidate core skills in Ophthalmology and we would be keen to continue to support doctors who wish to work towards CESR (Certificate of eligibility for specialist registration). The job plan is primarily supporting our medical retina team but could be tailored according to an individual’s Personal Development Plan. The successful candidate will be required to maintain General Medical Council (GMC) full registration with a licence to practise and revalidation and should follow the GMC’s Code of Good Medical Practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support the glaucoma service primarily but will have the opportunity to develop skills in medical retina and Eye Casualty/Acute Referral Clinics, perform cataract / laser surgeries and working alongside consultants in other sub-specialty ophthalmic clinics. The department is very progressive and has not only undergone a sub-specialty transformation and implemented ophthalmology-specific electronic patient records but has also been progressive in developing its ‘virtual’ clinic portfolio. The successful candidate will be expected to perform independent intravitreal injections.

Training in cataract and other sub-specialty surgery is possible and can substitute for other activities in the proposed timetable. We have previously arranged for appointees to access the EyeSi ocular surgery simulator at Bournemouth in order to develop skills and evidence for their portfolio.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in weekly teaching sessions and a programme of audit. We have Local and National research projects run by our research fellow based at Salisbury and at the University Department in Southampton. Previous appointees have presented results of this work at international conferences.

The successful applicant will work alongside our Deanery trainees and this also helps provide valuable insight into a career and training in Ophthalmology.
