Job overview

The post holder will have a recognised fellowship in Wrist and Hand surgery with experience in all aspects of wrist and hand surgery (both trauma and elective related). They will also require competence in general Orthopaedic trauma surgery. The post holder will participate in the general Orthopaedic on call rota currently 1 in 12 weekend end and 1 in 12 weekday and support the general Orthopaedic trauma workload. Candidate for the appointment should have a genuine trauma interest and be willing to work alongside colleagues in the Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery departments to support the demand for complex ortho-plastic trauma surgery.

Some of the elective surgical activity performed by the successful post holder will be undertaken at SULIS/SOC/SEOC.

Main duties of the job

Working with the other consultants and wider multi-disciplinary team within Trauma & Orthopaedics and Plastic surgery team, the post-holder will:

-       Lead the further development and improvement of the Wrist & Hand surgery service within the Trust, to improve the timely management of patients with Wrist injuries, Hand and Wrist pathology and increase the resilience of the service.

-       Participate in morning trauma meetings to share knowledge and contribute to senior consensus decision making.

-       Participate in the T&O consultant on-call rota, taking responsibility for all patients admitted under their care and ensuring timely senior assessment and decision making to facilitate appropriate investigation, prompt management and early discharge.

-       Working with the ortho-geriatric and anaesthetic teams to ensure optimal delivery of care for elderly hip or femur fracture patients and achievement of NHFD best practice targets where appropriate. Working with the Plastic Surgery team to ensure optimal delivery of care for wrist & hand trauma and elective service.

-       Undertake regular ward rounds of in-patients under their care, ensuring handing over of responsibility to colleagues for periods of planned absence and taking over responsibility from colleagues to help cover for absences. Undertake weekly fracture clinic and elective wrist & Hand clinics.

Qualifications and Specialist Training

Essential criteria
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in leading to entry onto GMC Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedics
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Experience/Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in Trauma and Orthopaedics with fellowship training in Wrist & Hand surgery
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems: demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach
  • Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice

Management Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team, including a multidisciplinary team and to motivate and develop staff
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets
