Consultant - Respiratory Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a colleague to join our dynamic and forward-looking team of respiratory consultants. We strive for excellent quality patient-centred care across a comprehensive range of respiratory services. We provide a comprehensive Respiratory service for both Inpatient & Outpatients across the range of sub-specialities and work closely with our primary care colleagues. As a cohesive and collaborative group of consultants we offer a broad range of expertise and there is every opportunity for the new post holder to continue to develop an existing area of interest or develop expertise in a new sub-speciality

Our services are supported by an excellent multidisciplinary team of Respiratory and Lung Cancer Nurse specialists along with outpatient physiotherapy and pulmonary physiology. We work closely with an enthusiastic secretarial team who provide administrative support. Our junior doctor team includes Specialist Registrars, Respiratory Clinical Fellows and Internal Medicine and Foundation trainees.

We welcome applications from individuals who will bring new and dynamic ideas to help us develop and deliver excellent patient centred care  now and into the future.

Main duties of the job

Our new colleague will join the existing respiratory consultants in delivering a high quality and patient centred inpatient & outpatient specialist care to our local population of around 270,000 people. Inpatient responsibilities are on a rotational basis with other respiratory colleagues, some weeks focusing on the respiratory ward & speciality inpatient referral & other weeks with more outpatient & procedure activity.

We have a well-established fibreoptic bronchoscopy, EBUS and thoracoscopy service with opportunity to develop this further. We provide an ambulatory pleural service including indwelling intra pleural catheter insertion. These services also offer an excellent opportunity to engage in practical training & education for our speciality trainees.

Our robust Lung Cancer service has a weekly multidisciplinary team meeting attended by Medical and Clinical Oncology & Palliative Care teams & virtually by the Thoracic Surgeons. Systemic anti-cancer therapy is delivered on site with timely radiotherapy & surgery provided by colleagues in Southampton.

We have a small domiciliary non-complex non-invasive ventilation service as well as an extensive Sleep service which serves the local population as well as Dorset. There is opportunity to expand an interest in domiciliary NIV by developing links with our onsite regional Spinal Unit. We have close links with the Southampton Difficult Asthma & Interstitial Lung Disease teams & other tertiary centres in London & further afield
