Job overview

The Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting for a Consultant Cardiologist with expertise in Coronary Interventional Procedures the appointed candidate will join an existing team of 11 Consultants & one SAS doctor. On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly team and will help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients. 

There is an excellent Team ethos within the department, with Medical, Nursing and Physiologist teams working closely together and delivering an integrated patient care pathway for inpatients, elective casework and outpatients.

The department currently employs 10 substantive Consultants. This is a happy well-functioning department where development of interests is encouraged, cross-cover is standard to improve patient care, excellent working relationships between all staff are the norm. It is a popular hospital for specialist registrar training due to ring-fenced training. The trainees and new physiologists are actively encouraged and supported to achieve BSE & BHRS accreditation. Close working with other departments is the norm, and the whole hospital exemplifies the civility saves lives campaign. There is an excellent team ethos within the department, with medical, nursing and physiologist teams working closely together and delivering an integrated patient care pathway for inpatients, elective casework and outpatients. 

Main duties of the job

As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues.   As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing, you will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. The Trusts Health and Wellbeing team has won a National Award during 2020 for the work they have done locally.

The cardiology department currently provides acute inpatient services for patients through the coronary care unit (14 beds) and Mercury Ward (18 beds). The Department currently runs a 1 in 10 ward-based consultant rota to cover the CCU ward round and operates an out of hours on-call rota which is 1 in 10.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Management and Leadership Responsibilities:

All staff in each Division are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Division. Consultants are key members of the Division and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.

To support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.

To contribute to the leadership and development of Services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trust’s business plans.

The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC
  • CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants of equivalent status), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the specialty appropriate for this consultant post at the time of taking up the consultant appointment. Alternatively, candidates can hold or be within 6 months of their CCT at interview.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
  • Expertise in full range of Cardiology conditions
  • Ability to lead a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Recent experience of emergency trans-venous temporary pacing and pericardiocentesis (mentorship will be available by negotiation) – maintenance of emergency on call skills
  • Sub-speciality interests will be supported
