Consultant in Gastroenterology

We are thrilled to announce that with the launch of our Community Diagnostic Centre in West Swindon in November 2025 we are looking to expand our Gastroenterology team. 

We are seeking experienced Consultants join to our Gastroenterology and Hepatology department,  joining an existing team of 8 senior medical staff including Consultants & SAS doctors who work across 6 endoscopy rooms and screening (ERCP/stenting) facilities.

The launch of the Community Diagnostic Centre in November 2025 makes this an incredible time of innovation and expansion for the service and the successful candidate will work across dual sites between the Great Western Hospital and the CDC.

Main duties of the job

We use the latest Olympus scopes and stacks for both sites and offer ERCP EUS BCSP Small Bowel Capsule endoscopy, Oesophageal dilatation and 1 GA list/month. We also plan to commence Oesophageal stenting is which is currently done in radiology with plans to incorporate this into the gastroenterology screening lists in the future. 

The post holder would be encouraged to develop and lead a subspecialty interest. Upper GI and HPB cancer are managed collaboratively with John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford .

Our MDT’s are well supported by pathology radiology and surgeons working very closely with our surgical and radiology colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues. Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC
  • CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants of equivalent status), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the specialty appropriate for this consultant post at the time of taking up the consultant appointment. Alternatively, candidates can hold or be within 6 months of their CCT at interview.
  • MRCP (UK)/MRCP (Gastroenterology) or equivalent
  • CESR (Gastroenterology)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
  • Expertise in full range of Gastrointestinal conditions
  • Ability to lead a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Sub-speciality interests will be supported

Management Admin

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable ability to manage priorities
  • Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills
  • Experience of audit and management
  • Flexible approach to work organisation Ability to lead project teams
