Bank Contract - Hours as required.
This post is a Band 6 Bank role to support the service delivery of Occupational Therapy across the Acute Wards at Great Western Hospital at weekends.. The role covers Saturday and Sunday working. You will be working alongside an experienced members of the Acute OT Team.
Main duties of the job
Support the clinical delivery of Occupational Therapy on the Acute Wards by:
- Prioritising patients who require OT to support weekends discharges.
- Provide interventions inc. Assessing and providing equipment to enable and support on discharge.
- Providing Risk Assessments for care agencies for new equipment.
- Signposting and referring patients on to services to support follow up on discharge.
- Liaising with the MDT to support problem solving blocks to weekend discharges for example working with transport teams and our discharge support teams.
- Providing guidance and training to patients and their families and carers to promote independence to manage at home, following acute illness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role of the Senior Occupational Therapist is to provide, develop and deliver a specialised and skilled level of Occupational Therapy intervention to each service within the rotation.

To be aware of the total therapy needs of the team, the changing demands and act in consultation with the Team Leaders to fulfil these needs.

To be able to be proactive at delivering therapeutic interventions within a timely manner to enable patients to maintain their independence, identifying when patients would benefit from further rehabilitation and support services and to refer on to other services appropriately.

To assist with the continuous service development of the therapy services to provide high quality care and timely intervention.

To manage complex diverse cases which may include medical, neurological, traumatic brain injury, surgical, orthopedic, musculo-skeletal and psychiatric conditions.

To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

To work within a framework of local, national and Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT) delivered standards and evaluate quality of practice.

Person specification
Education
Essential criteria
- Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
- Registered with Health and care Professions Council
- Evidence of continuing Professional Development and postgraduate learning relevant to clinical area – e.g., Falls, Elderly rehabilitation, Frailty, Admission avoidance, Neurology, use of equipment.
- Registered Field Work Educator
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of basic management training
- Apprenticeship / NVQ Assessor
- Post graduate training e.g. Normal movement training, advanced cognitive/perceptual training
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant post-graduate experience in rehabilitation
- Broad range of clinical experience e.g. surgery, acute experience, Front Door, neurology, medical, orthopaedic, community
- Experience of providing supervision for less experienced staff or assistants.
- Experience of providing a broad range of interventions for a complex caseload.
- Experience of the application of the Occupational therapy process and models of practice
Desirable criteria
- Experience of providing a broad range of interventions for a highly complex caseload
- Experience of project work
- Awareness of budget management
- Experience of Inter-disciplinary team working
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance e.g. audit, risk management, education
- Use of goal setting and outcome measures
- Up to date evidence based clinical knowledge
- Ability to manage resources
- Well established knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools and outcome measures
Desirable criteria
- Acute / deteriorating patient / virtual ward assessment skills e.g. A and E experience or Community Urgent Response
- Working knowledge of internal/external NHS environment
- Knowledge of NHS National strategy e.g. NHS plan, NSF’s, Nice Guidance
