Our scope extends beyond boundaries as we oversee adult community services in Swindon and provide acute care from the Great Western Hospital.
Our 5,500 staff have 1.2m patient contacts a year, with 13,000 operations carried out in our Theatres, around 4,000 babies born, and our emergency attendances are now well over 100,000 per year. Those numbers only tell part of our story about what an exciting time it is to join Great Western Hospitals.
We are cultivating a culture that fosters our ambitions, prioritising equality, diversion, inclusion, wellbeing, and leadership. We aim to create an environment where every member of our team can truly thrive.

Job overview
This full time role is a fixed term contract for 13 months.
We are seeking an Acute Oncology Nurse to join our dynamic team, delivering expert care to patients with cancer-related complications and emergencies, bridging the gap between acute care and oncology services. The successful candidate will be expected to work Monday to Friday in core hours, excluding bank holidays.
The Acute Oncology Service is a pivotal service in the Trust, acting as clinical resource to healthcare professionals in the recognition and management of acute oncology conditions, providing emotional support and education to patients and families at critical points in their cancer journey.
We are inviting applications from nurses with experience of managing cancer-related complications and nurses with experience of managing acutely unwell patients.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to work autonomously and cohesively with the Acute Oncology Nursing team and healthcare teams across the organisation in all matters related to Acute Oncology. You will give advice, instigate investigations and implement patient care as appropriate to manage acutely unwell oncology patients. Excellent time management skills are needed for this role to independently manage a caseload of patients whilst balancing the needs of the wider service.
You will be instrumental in the development and implementation of local and network wide management and treatment protocols and pathways. You will provide essential cross department liaison and communication to coordinate care and improve patient experience, reduce length of stay and when possible avert hospital admissions.
Working for our organisation
Our STAR values – Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect – are a golden thread running through everything we do. These values serve as a guiding principle, driving us towards our vision of delivering great joined up services to our local community. Whether at home, in the community, or within the hospital, our goal is to empower individuals to lead independent and healthier lives.
