We are looking for a highly motivated full time, permanent Band 5/6 Orthoptist (depending upon experience) to join our team of 3 Orthoptists, Optometrist and 4 consultant Ophthalmologists based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

The Orthoptic department provides general adult and paediatric clinics including patients from eye casualty, neurology, stroke rehabilitation team, secondary vision screening, visual processing difficulty referrals and special school screening.

The Orthoptic service is based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital with outreach clinics based at several community locations therefore the post holder must be able to travel carrying equipment.

We are an accredited department for orthoptic under-graduate students and as a teaching hospital we are involved in the clinical teaching of medical students, junior doctors, pre-registration optometrists and other professionals. The successful candidate will be required to work as part of an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team.

Professional development is encouraged and full participation is required in clinical audit, clinical governance sessions, dedicated journal clubs, departmental meetings and courses/ seminars relevant to the role.

Main duties of the job

Undertake Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, of paediatric and adult patients referred to the Orthoptic Service, with a range of vision, ocular motility and binocular vision defects, including referrals from casualty, neurology, maxillo-facial, endocrine and Stroke/rehabilitation units.

Work autonomously and to make clinical decisions using his/her own judgement and initiative seeking advice from a senior Orthoptic colleague as required.

To be responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring individual Orthoptic treatment for patients of all ages using professional judgement to adjust treatments, referring to the Ophthalmologist when appropriate, and planning appropriate and timely discharge, following the department discharge policy. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
