Job overview

Applications are invited for a full-time appointment for a 12 month fixed term Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3-5 equivalent) in the Norfolk and Waveney Urology service, providing care across three Acute Trusts. It is expected that the post holder will be trained in general urology.

The post holder will be responsible for elective and emergency urology inpatients, and participate in the on-call rota and will also have a 1 in 10 weekend on-call commitment at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). This post is based NNUH.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to work at Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3 or above) level, supporting the Foundation Year 1 & 2 Trainee’s and also to provide on-call urology cover during the day. The appointee will be supported by two senior Specialty Doctors.

The successful appointee will be responsible for the day to day running of the urology ward, assisting in theatre sessions, Outpatient clinics and arranging admission and discharges under Consultant supervision. A ward round will be conducted each morning with junior staff, which will incorporate the management of elective urological patients and seeing ward referrals.

The appointee will undertake the routine and emergency care of urology patients under consultant supervision. The appointee would be expected to provide 1st on-call cover for Urological emergencies on a 1:10 rota The post will give plenty of opportunities for learning urological procedures. There is exposure to theatres and endoscopy sessions on a regular basis where hands on training will be given. It is ideally suited to anybody who would like to pursue a career in urology.

A pro-active role should be taken in departmental audits and must participate in the on-going teaching activities of the department.

A flexible attitude to adjusting to changes within the department will be necessary. The appointee will be given the opportunity to receive further training in his/her own special interest.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience SHO/STR or above
  • Knowledge & understanding of UK hospital systems, practices and values; awareness of current issues in the NHS
  • Evidence of training progression
  • Clinical Knowledge & Expertise; appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection. Understands principles of clinical governance in clinical practice
  • Ability to prioritise clinical needs with awareness of own limitations and the ability to know when to consult senior advice
  • Proficiency in minor and intermediate urological surgery
