Main duties of the job

You will be expected to participate in the daily clinical activity of the HPB Unit, from ward rounds to out-patient clinics and theatres and will also be involved in non-clinical duties such as education and training of junior medical and nursing staff.

A large part of the post will involve dedicated time for research and academic activity and in particular you will be expected to lead on a number of projects and to produce a number of publications during the fellowship.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will ideally have:

1) MRCS or equivalent
2) At least 2 years of General Surgery experience post MRCS level
3) At least 1 year of HPB experience in a tertiary unit
4) Have demonstrated willingness to participate in research and/or quality improvement


About the team:
The Southampton HPB unit consists of 8 Consultant Surgeons (1 academic, and 7 NHS consultants).
The Unit is a busy tertiary referral centre with a catchment area of approximately 3.7 million in the central south coast of England. More than 250 major liver and pancreatic resections are performed yearly in addition to a large number of benign and emergency surgical cases.
The unit has a long history of minimally invasive HPB resections and now runs one of the largest and most successful robotic HPB programmes in the UK. 

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).   

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.  

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. 

Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     

Basic Salary – MT04  £61,825 
                    
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
Desirable criteria
  • MRCS or Equivalent

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • More than 1 years’ experience in HPB surgery
  • Evidence of successful completion of an ATLS Course
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
  • Clear thinking, showing an analytical/scientific approach
  • Manual dexterity and hand/eye co-ordination
  • Participation in audit
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Laparoscopic and/or robotic HPB Surgery
  • Experienced in surgical and advanced laparoscopic skills
  • Breadth of experience with awareness in and outside specialty / medicine
  • Evidence-based practice use
  • NHS experience of clinical governance and resource constraints; management/ financial awareness experience of committee work
  • Contribution to non-professional organisations
  • Active involvement in audit
  • IT skills
