Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Paediatric Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist, based at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. This is a great opportunity for an experienced nurse to provide visible and supportive leadership to our team. The Paediatric Allergy Day Unit is a busy unit which provides a 5-day service; and supported by a team of world renowned Specialist Consultants, where staff are trained in oral food challenges, intravenous drug challenges, skin prick test, and spirometry.

The successful candidate will have access to all Paediatric Allergy courses that are available at our Imperial College and other institutions.
Aside from promoting positive learning culture, the post holder will lead on a range of risks, governance and quality improvement. The post holder will work with the MDT in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care and staff development. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in elective, and emergency or unforeseen situations.

It is an expectation that all staff employed who come in contact with children and young people have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide safe, high quality, individualised, evidence based nursing care with the support of and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.  This includes dealing with complex situations, taking appropriate action in an emergency and unforeseen situations.
  • Develop the specialist clinical skills and knowledge to achieve the competences required in order to carry out all relevant duties without direct supervision. 
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist allergy nursing care and advice to support children, young people, their families and carers managing their health conditions. 
  • Participate in service audit, evaluation and continuous improvement which achieves the  highest quality of evidence based care providing the best sustainable outcomes for children, young people and their families & carers
  • Take charge of the clinical needs of a group of defined patients and of the clinical area in the absence of more senior staff, prioritising workload according to changing clinical need, utilising appropriate support as necessary to ensure safe, high quality care is maintained at all times.

Education

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN (child) or RN (adult)
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff, mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject area or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Non-medical prescribing
  • Advanced practice qualification
  • Cannulation and phlebotomy skills
  • Spirometry ARTP qualification or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at Band 6 or above in any acute setting.

Skills
