As a Band 6 Ward Sister/Charge Nurse it is expected that you will play an active role in the development of the team, and be willing to take on managerial duties, whilst supporting the ward manager. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you will be expected to work as part of a team as well as using your own initiative and will be positively encouraged to recognise and develop service improvement.
Ward 4 and The BMRU (Brachytherapy and Molecular Radiotherapy Unit) is a combined unit over 2 floors and staff can rotate between both areas. Full training for this unit will be provided.
Main duties of the job
To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality evidence-based care to patients.
To advocate for patients and exercise clinical judgement about patients’ needs in terms of plans and long-term goals.
To communicate openly with the team at safety huddles, cascading important information that impacts the team / patient care.
To participate fully in the day to day running of the ward.
You would be responsible for supporting the senior sister in the management of the clinical area and supporting junior staff.
Ensuring the ward is safely staffed, complete return to work interviews, supporting junior staff to develop their skills and confidence in caring for patients.
You will be responsible for a small group of staff of your own which you will take charge and ensure their annual professional development review is completed and their essential training is up to date.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
To deputise for and support the Ward Manager
Provide management support for the junior staff and act as mentor to designated staff
Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records
To organise daily work schedule ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs
To have an awareness of the staff and non staff budget
Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately
Ensure all trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary
Regularly liaise and report to Department Manager/Senior Nursing team on unit affairs and staff development.
Ensure each designated staff member participates in a personal development plan and act to maximise the potential of others
Assist in nursing recruitment process when required
Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Department manager/Senior Nursing team
TRAINING & EDUCATION
Complete the Ward Introductory Pack and Preceptor pack
Complete relevant in-house level 1 and 2 I.V. training programmes and ensure regular updates
Participate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice
To be up to date in all IV training programs including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice including assessment of critically ill patient and competent in performing ECG’s
Attend all mandatory study days
PROFESSIONAL
Act as a resource giving advice and support to nursing staff regarding emergency admissions and associated issues
Liaise closely with the medical team and other members of the MDT in respect of patient care promoting the highest standard of care
To develop and maintain a professional interest in all aspects of nursing and associated research
To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and
undertake relevant projects
Demonstrates the agreed set of values and accountable for own attitude and behaviour
