Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for 8 months to cover maternity leave within a dynamic multidisciplinary integrated community respiratory service.
We are looking for an enthusiastic respiratory physiotherapist to co-lead the service alongside the nurse lead and feel this would suit either a current 8a or band 7 looking to develop and gain experience.
The current physiotherapist leads the pulmonary rehabilitation, home oxygen and physiotherapy services including airway clearance, dysfunctional breathing and chronic dyspnoea management.
The role is currently spilt approximately 50/50 clinical/managerial with shared team lead responsibilities with the lead nurse and advice and support from the respiratory consultant and 8b cardiac nurse lead.
The Community Cardio-Respiratory Services is an integrated service, consisting of a lead respiratory consultant, an 8a nurse lead, clinical specialist nurses, physiotherapists, a physiologist and support and clerical staff.
We work across hospital and community pathways, providing community services in clinic and home-based settings.

Main duties of the job
- To provide a Clinical Specialist Respiratory service, utilising expert clinical and non-clinical skills to triage, assess and manage patients to the service.
- To work both independently and within the MDT, managing the discharge, transition home and onward referrals of patients. Frequently involved in complex discharges (including terminal care) and assessments of the home environment.
- To work collaboratively within the MDT to deliver therapy programmes. To undertake a key worker role within the MDT to ensure co-ordination of patient episode of care and safe and effective discharge into the community
- To request and use the results of specialist investigations (e.g. chest x-rays, arterial blood gases, spirometry, oxygen assessments and nebuliser trials) to assist the formulation of diagnoses and plan patient management.
- To establish and manage Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programmes
- To receive referrals from and make referrals to consultants, GPs and other healthcare professionals within or outside the Trust. To manage the admission and discharge of patients to own caseload
- To provide expert physiotherapy and respiratory assessment and diagnosis for patients with a wide range of highly complex conditions.

Education
Essential criteria
- Honours Degree in Physiotherapy (or equivalent)
- Health Professions Council professional registration.
- Evidence of academic/intellectual level equivalent of Masters Level
- Evidence of development to clinical specialist level in Respiratory Physiotherapy
- Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio
Desirable criteria
- Masters or PhD degree in Relevant Subject
- Formal Leadership/ Management training
- Membership of relevant professional groups
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 5 years post graduate experience in physiotherapy
- Broad base of clinical experience prior to specialising
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience within Respiratory Physiotherapy at a senior level
- Clinical Supervision of other staff
- Evaluation of clinical practice including participation in research/audit.
Desirable criteria
- Clinical leadership of a physiotherapy or multidisciplinary team
- Published papers
- Formal research experience
- Advanced computer skills for presentation and data analysis
- MSc or equivalent experience as clinical tutor or supervisor
Skills
Essential criteria
- Expert clinical reasoning skills in the appropriate application of a range of techniques and approaches to the management of Respiratory conditions.
- Ability to remain updated with professional practice and research and integrates this into daily patient management.
- Ability to lead, motivate and inspire others
- Ability to analyse activity and outcome data accurately and objectively.
