Job overview

The appointee will join the well-established Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Integrated Pain Services as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine as part of a service development plan, for a new 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit under in the new Acute Surgical Block (ASB) under construction which is due for completion in the autumn of 2025.  

 

Applicants must be included in the GMC Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of CCT accreditation. The successful applicant will provide a comprehensive high quality service to the department as a consultant intensivist.  

 

The Clinical Lead for Intensive Care Medicine, at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, is Dr Raza. The successful applicant will join a friendly team in a growing Intensive Care Medicine Department with 13 consultants including single speciality ICM, dual speciality ICM / Anaesthesia or ICM / Emergency Medicine Consultants. The post involves provision of regular day time ICM commitment and out of hours on call ICM consultant commitment.

 

Luton and Dunstable hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands.  London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from the hospital.

Main duties of the job

The main duties and responsibilities of the post include:

 

      Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients requiring Intensive Care.

 

      To undertake duties as part of the on call out of hours consultant rota.

 

      To work constructively and flexibly with colleagues in the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Integrated Pain Management to provide the best care for patients. 

 

      Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students. 

 

      To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.

 

      To have responsibility for and actively participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • FFICM or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Other relevant qualifications eg DICM, EDIC, FRCA, MRCP, FRCP

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
  • CCT in ICM (or within 6 months of completion of CCT)
  • CESR in ICM (must be on the specialist register at the time of application)
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of subspecialty training or fellowship out of region

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of Safeguarding for Children and Adults
  • Current ALS provider status (or European equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in relevant national audits
  • Implementation of evidence-based guidelines

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
Desirable criteria
  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.
  • GMC registered educational supervisor

Personnel Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff in the multidisciplinary team
  • Leadership Skills
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.

Personnel Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Record of regular attendance at national specialty meetings or up-to-date CPD activity related to ICM
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for the care of critically ill patients
Desirable criteria
  • Use of ultrasound in critical care
  • Accreditation in point of care ultrasound course (eg FICE or PocUS)
