Job overview
The Server Specialist (SS) role is a technical position.
The Server Specialist will use their extensive technical expertise to
take a lead role in the infrastructure team focused on the team
management of engineers and operationally manage the infrastructure
systems and servers, ensuring servers and systems are deployed
correctly, adhere to technical standards.
The Server Specialist provides an escalation point for the wider team,
applying expert knowledge to assist in the resolution of problems and
develop the knowledge of the team. The role provides specialist
advice across a range of IT infrastructure areas including, but not
limited to; Server Compute, Storage (SAN/NAS), Enterprise
Hypervisors (ESXi, Hyper-V, AHV), Converged infrastructure, VDI
(VMware, Citrix, MS RDS), Active Directory, DNS, File Systems, Print
Services, Data Backup & Protection Systems* including both
installation and support.
They are responsible for strategic planning; complex incident
resolution and project works within the team.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work flexibly in addition to rota or on call
arrangements as when appropriate.
The role requires an extensive knowledge and experience of Windows
Server operating systems, Microsoft Hyper-V/Azure/365, server and
storage hardware in an enterprise environment. A good working
understanding of networking technologies is also required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role requires knowledge of the following technologies and/or
skills:
• Virtualized environments such as Microsoft Hyper-V
• Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, DFS GPO’s etc…
• Office 365 (SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Online)
• Mail & Web filtering tools
•Windows Server & Exchange
•VPN applications such as Microsoft Direct Access or Always on VPN
•Remote Desktop Services
•Backup and recovery tools such as Microsoft DPM
•Antivirus – Sophos, Windows Defender
•Microsoft SQL Server
•Microsoft SCCM
The post holder will in addition have managerial responsibility for two Server Engineers and a Platform Engineer.
The post holder will also be responsible to the Infrastructure Manager, for the efficient and effective support of Information Technology and Computerised systems and services throughout the Trust, to support first class patient care.

Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 4 years of relevant experience in similar roles.
- Knowledge and experience of Microsoft operating systems.
- Knowledge and experience of networking principles.
Desirable criteria
- IT experience gained in Acute healthcare setting.
Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level qualification or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area
- Post-graduate degree or equivalent
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Infrastructure - Windows Servers, Active directory, group policy, DNS, DHCP, VPN, patching Extensive experience of Microsoft cloud technologies inc Azure, O365
- Experience managing a corporate data center and associated technologies
- Significant experience VMware products including ESXi / Horizon Significant experience of scripting and automated deployments including powershell
- Significant experience supporting and managing a server infrastructure in an enterprise environment
- Significant experience of successfully operating in a politically sensitive environment
- Evidence of continued professional development Experience of co-ordinating projects in complex and challenging environments
Desirable criteria
- Microsoft MCSE/MCSA or equivalent qualification.
- PRINCE2 Foundation.
- ITIL Foundation
- Management of Cloud compute platforms (IaaS, PaaS & SaaS) from multiple vendors including Availability, Scaling, Costs & Security.
