Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Senior Maternity Support Worker to join our Homebirth Team at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. This role involves providing high-quality, personalised care to women and families choosing homebirth, working closely with midwives to ensure safe and positive experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support midwives in delivering care during antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods.
  • Assist with clinical observations, documentation, and preparation of equipment for homebirths.
  • Provide emotional and practical support to women and families in their own homes.
  • Promote safe practice and uphold professional standards in line with Trust policies.

Essential Requirements:

  • Level 2 qualification in Maths and English.
  • Level 4 Assistant Practitioner (Maternity) qualification.
  • Care Certificate 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including on-call duties.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in maternity or community care settings.
  • Understanding of homebirth pathways and safeguarding procedures.

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
  • Care Certificate (or willing to complete within 3 months)
  • Assistant Practitioner Foundation Degree – Maternity Pathway
  • Level 5 Foundation Degree In Health & Care

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate achievement of numeracy and literacy skills. Ability to read / write and speak, receive and understand instructions in English
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own delegated workload
  • Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and nonverbal communication) with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of health care professionals, on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skills
  • Ability to work under pressure across competing priorities , Ability to deal with nonroutine and unpredictable nature of workload and individual patient contact
  • Ability to participate in reflective practice and clinical supervision activities
  • Ability to develop effective and appropriate relationships with people, their families, carers and colleagues
  • Ability to support, supervise, assess and act as a role model to nursing associate students, other learners and health care support workers as required within the clinical setting

KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the scope of the role of the maternity support worker in context of the midwifery and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development
  • Understanding of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity
  • Awareness of health and safety issues
  • Has knowledge in relation to the parameters and scope of practice in which the post holder should work and when to seek advice and support/ escalate of others for expert help and advice
  • Willingness to take on new skills and develop scope of practice
  • Can articulate and understanding of the importance of following Policy / Procedure , guidelines and care and treatment plans
  • Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment under appropriate supervision as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of providing and receiving complex sensitive information
  • Experience of managing / prioritising own case load / workload, using initiative
  • Competent in a range of clinical skills and practices relevant to the scope of practice required
  • Experience in delegating duties to others
