Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a conscientious experienced Manager to join our Pathology Laboratory management team.
The Deputy Pathology Manager is an integral part of the overall Pathology Laboratory management team. The post holder will provide leadership and senior management support for the day the day operations of all the Pathology Departments across both sites of the Birmingham Women’s & Children’s NHSFT having direct responsibility for Blood Sciences.
Main duties of the job
Under the operational direction of the Pathology Manager the post holder will be responsible for the effective operation and service delivery of each Pathology discipline on both the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Women’s Hospital sites.
The post holder will be an enthusiastic, well-motivated individual with excellent attention to detail. They will have excellent communication & interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to work with staff at all levels both internal and external to the organisation. You will be able to work as part of a team and understand how vital maintaining good staff/ customer relationships and providing high levels of service are in a pathology laboratory environment.
You will have demonstrable experience in a senior role leading a department to include HR issues, finance, procurement, quality and governance.

The hours are full-time, notionally between 08:30 and 17:00 Monday to Friday, and the position is permanent.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc Hons in Biomedical Sciences or other honor’s degree approved by IBMS for registration with HCPC
- MSc Biomedical Sciences or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. FIBMS) ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
- Current Registration with Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Desirable criteria
- Supervisory or Management qualification, training or experience
- Member of relevant professional body e.g. IBMS
Knowledge & Nature of Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of being a Laboratory Manager/Head BMS for an NHS Pathology Department
- Evidence of leading a Pathology department through UKAS inspections
- Evidence of overseeing the Financial management of a pathology department
- Evidence of undertaking and dealing with HR issues within a pathology department
- Evidence of leading structured departmental meetings
- Evidence in a senior role leading a department to include procurement, quality and governance.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of completing or leading a Business Case
Analytical & Judgement Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of analysis of Laboratory data such as financial budget statements, KPI Trends or activity data
Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows and other associated software
- Evidence of Laboratory Information systems within an NHS environment
- Evidence at working with management teams beyond their own discipline
- Evidence of leading service improvements
Desirable criteria
- Advanced LIMS skills such as data gathering
Personal Skills/Abilities and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Has spoken with Pathology Manager about role and visited the department
- Evidence of good report writing demonstrated by application form
- Evidence of Teaching and training experience across a range of staff groups
- Evidence of teamworking and a supportive approach
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
