Support Medical Secretary - Pain Management

Job overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Support Medical Secretary to provide administrative and typing duties within the Pain Management Department.  You should have a meticulous approach to work and excellent communication skills to support our team of existing Medical Secretarial and administrative team.

Please note, this is a 12 month fixed term post.

Main duties of the job

To provide a support medical secretarial service within the Directorate.   To undertake accurate audio/copy typing of medical correspondence and general administration for the Consultants and their teams.  This will include highly sensitive and complex medical terminology with a need for confidentiality. 

 Dealing with enquiries from the patients/relatives, general practitioners and individual departments .  Reassuring patients (carers/relatives if appropriate) waiting for appointments, test results and commencement of treatment.  Assessing priorities, making and re-arranging appointments or passing messages on to the Medical Team for further attention.

General admin duties including photocopying, filing, bring forward system for investigation filing system, answering the telephone and other office duties, including the requisition and maintenance of adequate stationery stocks.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • OCR/RSA II Typing or equivalent
  • Medical Audio Typing/Transcription
  • GCSE or equivalent Grade C or above in English Language
Desirable criteria
  • AMSPAR Diploma
  • ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence

Knowledge & Training

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Willing to undertake training to meet the requirements of the role in an ever-changing NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of hospital Patient Administration System(s)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word
Desirable criteria
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Previous experience as a Medical Secretary
  • Evidence of researching position applied for

Communication & Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
