Job overview

Biomedical Scientists (Specialist) are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and of drug therapy by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques.

Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, cerebrospinal fluid, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and other stones. 

The post holder is responsible for a team of Specialist Biomedical Scientists and/or Medical Laboratory Assistants and/or other support workers, working within a section to deliver a medical laboratory service to achieve the objectives of efficient patient care, and resource management within the Trust.  The post holder is responsible for; the day-to-day organisation, maintenance of work flow and any particular responsibilities associated with their designated section; teaching and development of staff currently in their section; maintaining at all times the required high standards and quality; maintaining an up to date knowledge specialist knowledge and current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory.  The post-holder will participate in laboratory clinical governance management meetings.

The post-holder will participate in laboratory clinical governance management meetings.

The post holder is responsible for the non automated section of the biochemistry laboratory and to be the nominated training officer for the laboratory.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To manage and deploy Biomedical Scientists, MLA and other staff within their section of responsibility, to respond to changing demands ensuring appropriate staff distribution to meet service needs. To give first line approval for annual leave and manage staff sickness.

To provide cover for the Clinical Chemistry Operational Manager or other Section Leaders in their absence as required.

To ensure high standards of technical and scientific performance and efficiency throughout the section are achieved and when requested initiating improvements and changes in working practice to meet the required standards. To ensure good communication within their section and with other laboratory areas.

To act as the first point of contact for staff performance and competency issues within the section.

To support recruitment, selection and induction of staff.

To ensure adherence to Trust policies within their section.

To perform appraisal/personal development reviews.

To have skills and knowledge of Health and Safety/Training/stock ordering/ Rota's/ Quality
