Job overview
We are seeking to recruit to a new full time Specialist Grade post to provide senior medical input to assessments and care of community patients aged 65 years and older. The post holder will engage in multi professional assessments and management of patients with severe and enduring mental disorders.
The post holder will also provide clinical leadership in the contribution of developing the service in line with the Community Mental Health Transformation (NHS England) plan. Leading new practice and service redesign in response to feedback, evaluation and needs.
As a senior and experienced specialist clinician the post holder will work independently to a level of defined competencies with minimal supervision from the Consultant. A minimum of 12 years medical work since obtaining primary medical qualification, with a minimum of 6 years within psychiatry in the Specialty Doctor or equivalent grade, of which at least 2 years should be within Old Age Psychiatry.
Main duties of the job
Providing expertise and clinical decision making, the post holder will work as a senior and autonomous practitioner, managing complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients. The role will also require oversight of physical health care of patients, screening and intervention for metabolic syndrome.
As a Specialist Grade the appointee will be comfortable to manage situations that are unfamiliar, complex or unpredictable through collaboration with others.

Essential criteria
- Recognised medical degree
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
- Eligible for approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act.
- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Completed at minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous or aggregated since obtaining primary medical qualification
- Minimum of 6 years’ experience within psychiatry in the Specialty Doctor or equivalent grade – of which at least 2 years should be within Old Age Psychiatry - overseas experience will be accepted.
- Clinical evaluates and manages a patient, formulates diagnosis, initiatives appropriate management plan, reviewing and adjusting depending on outcomes of treatment
- Manages the complexity of uncertainty in the care of patients, employing expertise in clinical decision-making as a senior and independent/autonomous practitioner
- Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions.
- Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement
- Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level
- Awareness of legal responsibilities relevant to the role around mental capacity and deprivation of liberty
- Understanding of a range of leadership principles, approaches, and techniques, adapting behaviours to improve engagement and outcomes.
- Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD with evidence of CPD orientated at working with older people with SMI and/or dementia
- Ability to use IT, including e-mail and the internet
- Knowledge of risk management
- A good understanding of the RiO electronic clinical record system
- Commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement within multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience of carrying out audit projects

Desirable criteria
- Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PHD, MSc or additional clinical qualifications
- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
- Eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
- Broad experience in Risk Management
- Experience of contributing to or completion of a service improvement project.
- Experience of stakeholder engagement in service delivery
- Experience serving a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population.
- Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
- Knowledge of recent developments and drug advances in the psychiatry specialty applied for.
- Knowledge of NHS planning
- Published research or audits
- Previous management experience
- Skills in working with individuals who are difficult to engage
