Job overview

This role offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Motor Neurone Disease service within a rapidly changing neurology service in a regional neuroscience centre, based in a diverse and attractive city. Your role will be key in delivering high quality, accessible care for people with motor neurone disease.

This is a 12 month Fixed Term post

Main duties of the job

The Bristol MND Care Centre was established in 2010 in partnership with the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The multi-disciplinary MND team provides care and support for people living with Motor Neurone Disease, their families and carers in Bristol, Gloucestershire, Bath and Somerset. MND clinics are held in Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Hospital and multi-disciplinary team meetings undertaken regularly in both hospital and community settings. The team is led by Dr Merrison, Consultant Neurologist and Director of the Bristol MND Care Centre and by Dr  De Oliveira, Consultant Neurologist. The MND Care Co-ordinator provides support across hospital, community, health and social care settings; as well as undertaking home visits.

The multidisciplinary team consists of doctors, the MND care co-ordinator, a specialist counselling psychologist, dietician and allied healthcare professionals. Respiratory support and cough management is provided by the Respiratory (NIV) team in University Hospitals Bristol & Weston (UHBW) with whom MDTs and joint clinics are undertaken. A gastrostomy service is delivered by the Interventional Radiology team at NBT. Consultant Palliative medicine input to the MND MDT is provided by the St Peter’s Hospice team, Bristol.

The Bristol MND Centre has participated in a number of national research studies and plans to develop and expand its research capacity. An MND research nurse (funded by the Motor Neurone Disease Association) is currently being recruited.

The MND service is integrated with the South West Neuromuscular network and its clinical services. This allows close collaboration, sharing of resource and expertise and aligned care pathways.
