Job overview

Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking a dedicated Specialty Doctor to join our Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (SCAMHS) and Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CATT).

This role provides an opportunity to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care across hospital and community settings, supporting the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions in children and young people. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to responsive crisis care and ongoing management of patients.

The post includes participation in the MHLD first on-call rota, with Consultant support available at all times (on-site during working hours and off-site out of hours).

Main duties of the job

•    Contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of a comprehensive SCAMHS service across the Health Board
•    Undertake timely and effective assessment and treatment of patients requiring urgent and acute mental health care
•    Provide clinical leadership and support to multidisciplinary team members within the service
•    Work collaboratively with clinical, medical, and managerial colleagues to ensure high-quality patient care
•    Support and participate in teaching, training, and research activities within the organisation
•    Engage in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery
•    Maintain accurate, high-quality clinical documentation and ensure effective communication across teams
•    Monitor patient experience and respond proactively to feedback to improve care outcomes
•    Practice in line with evidence-based guidelines, including NICE and National Service Framework standards
•    Uphold professional standards in accordance with “The Duties of a Doctor”

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties. 

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services. 

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers. 

Our services are provided in: 

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest 

  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire 

  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings 

  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers 

  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Person specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional clinical qualification(s).
  • Evidence of working towards membership of the Royal College.

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of risk management.
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
  • NHS Experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Able to demonstrate evidence of leading a team.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and resident doctors

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner
  • Flexible approach to the needs of the service
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
