Job overview

Please note that this vacancy will close when we receive sufficient completed applications.

The successful candidate will participate closely in all activities within the Directorate of Cardiothoracic surgery being directly accountable to the consultant staff. Roles will include participation in the pre-, intra- and post-operative management of patients under consultant supervision with specific focus on robotic surgical program. In addition, active participation in the academic program is seen as an important opportunity for personal development. Audit and service evaluation projects will be expected to be undertaken.

Main duties of the job

·       The appointee will be part of a team that provides on-going daytime care of inpatients. There is a corresponding out of hours commitment and responsibility for the initial assessment and management of acutely ill patients as well as in-patients transferred as emergencies or semi-urgently from local DGHs for specialised tertiary care. There is appropriate supervision with consultant support. The appointee will also rotate through CICU gaining experience of the specialist provision of clinical care for patients in a high-dependency setting. There are consultant-led ward rounds to facilitate review of all patients. All other inpatients are subject to twice-weekly consultant review. There is a weekly commitment to the outpatient service with appropriate support depending on the level of experience. This provides an opportunity for work-based assessments.

·       The core function is to support the consultant body in the comprehensive management of patients with diseases of the heart, lungs, and other chest organs. This role primarily involves day-to-day patient care on the wards, pre- and post-operative monitoring, and assisting in surgical procedures, all under appropriate supervision.
