Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a well-motivated and suitably qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology.  

The Pathology departments at South Tees Hospital (STH) and North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology with services being delivered on all four hospital sites. While employment will be with STH the post will require cross site working as appropriate.

The department has full UKAS accreditation and approved IBMS training. Microbiology is a dynamic and forward-thinking department providing an expert 24/7 service across all our hospital sites

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic candidate to join the department located at The James Cook University Hospital site. You will registered with HCPC and have successfully completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Medical Microbiology. Applicants not meeting these criteria will not be shortlisted. 

Main duties of the job

Under the direction of the Microbiology Management team, the post holder will be required to perform routine day-to-day operations within the Microbiology department, rotating between all sections within the speciality following approved methodologies and procedures. 
To assist in the training and development of Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Higher Healthcare Science Support Workers, Healthcare Support Workers and other staff grades according to departmental policy. 
It is expected that the post holder:
•    will work autonomously without direct supervision.
•    Will participate in a 24/7 shift system, weekend working, extended working day and out of hours cover applicable to the specific needs of the department.

Essential criteria
  • Good practical analytical skills relevant to diagnostic Microbiology laboratory. Knowledge of relevant legislation and safety measures.
  • Ability to provide judgment on a range of complex problems. Able to prioritise work according to demand and urgency.
  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a team
  • Able to communicate and maintain good relations with all levels of staff.

Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with LEAN principles

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • IBMS accredited degree
  • Completed Registration Portfolio
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Medical Microbiology
  • HCPC Registered
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD)
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at the leadership, development and improvement programmes

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a clinical laboratory
  • Experience of using a Laboratory information and management system.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety
  • Ability to use, control and maintain analytical equipment
  • Ability to train/support less qualified/experienced staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an accredited NHS clinical Microbiology department.
  • Experience of shift working or out of hours working.
