Main duties of the job
CLINICAL
i. Resuscitation and initial management of emergency cases in a team.
ii. Management of other patients presenting to the A & E Department, conducting minor operations & procedures when indicated.
iii. Supervision of the discharge of patients home.
iv. Management of patients returning to the department for review
v. Development of your own area of specialist interest (Please see below)
The appointee will be working at Trust Grade ST3+ level. The department is well supported for senior medical cover with EM Consultant presence in the department 24/7 from Monday to Sunday.
Working for our organisation
The Emergency Department is located in a purpose built facility at James Cook University Hospital and is a Regional Major Trauma Centre. A helipad is situated directly outside and radiology facilities and the Acute Assessment Unit are adjacent. The emergency department also has a number of inpatient beds on the trauma ward. The department sees around 105,000 new attendances per year and receives regional major trauma cases both by land and air. It covers all other facets of emergency medicine in all age groups.
The Department has three entrances, one for the ambulances, one for ambulatory patients and another for Children and Young Persons Emergency Department (CYPED). There is a large four bay adult resuscitation room and three paediatric resuscitation rooms, a portable ultrasound system, a plaster room and separate areas for stretcher patients and walking wounded patients. There is a separate children’s area for assessment which is also staffed by Paediatric Nurse Practitioners and an Urgent Care Centre based on site. The department compromises of 30 consultants whom have a variety of special interests including research, pre-hospital medicine, ultrasound, teaching/education and sports medicine whom are able to support trainees with there interests.

Clinical Experience and Effectiveness
Essential criteria
- • 4 years hospital service at foundation (or equivalent) or higher grade since obtaining registration
- • 6 months working with in the NHS
- • Previous Experience in Emergency Medicine
- • Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary team
- • Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
- • Knowledge of audit principles
- • Enthusiasm for clinical teaching of nurses, hospital doctors and others
Desirable criteria
- • Previous experience in ICM/Anaesthetics
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- • Registerable Medical Degree
- • Full registration with GMC with license to practice
- • MRCEM Primary/MRCEM SBA
- • Working towards MRCEM OSCE
- • ALS or equivalent
- • APLS or equivalent
- • ETC/ATLS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- • MRCEM
- • Point of care Ultrasound training
