Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated, dynamic colleague to join us and continue the delivery of a high class Endoscopy services.  You will support the activities of the endoscopy departments whilst developing your existing endoscopic skills and gaining exposure to more specialist advanced endoscopic techniques.  You will be based at the James Cook University Hospital; however, cross site working at the Friarage Hospital Northallerton will be required.

Main duties of the job

You will work alongside a variety of Consultant Gastroenterologists and be responsible to the Clinical Director of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Lead and Hepatology Lead. This post offers an opportunity to consolidate existing endoscopy skills in diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, whilst expanding your wider gastroenterology and hepatology experience. You will be expected to deliver service lists independently by working in a flexible manner.  You will also have commitment to outpatient gastroenterology and hepatology clinics based on service needs and individual training requirements.  You will have opportunities to attend multidisciplinary team meetings (UGI MDT, colorectal MDT, radiology meeting, complex hepatology meeting) and participate in audit/ research projects.

Working for our organisation

The Directorate of Gastroenterology offers care across both South Tees NHS Foundation Trust sites.  The existing interests of the consultant team encompass Hepatology, IBD, Nutrition, Pancreatico-biliary medicine and advanced endoscopy. These sub-specialist teams have recently been formalised to accelerate service development across the Directorate. There are endoscopy training and research leads to coordinate and develop these activities across the Directorate. The team has developed strong clinical links with the Hepatology and HPB teams at the Freeman Hospital Newcastle who provide regular satellite clinics at the JCUH site.

The Consultant team is supported by an Associate Specialist, Specialist Registrars,  Endoscopy fellows,  Foundation doctors,  IBD and Nutrition Service Specialist Nurses,  liver specialist nurses, PEG service nurses and  Nurse Endoscopists.

There is a purpose built 4-room Endoscopy Unit on the JCUH site utilising modern Olympus equipment (Q290 HD range) including scope guide imagers and Endosoft endoscopy reporting software, 3-room unit at Friarage Hospital and 1-room unit at Redcar Primary Hospital. The department provides a full range of endoscopic services including ERCP, EUS, complex polypectomy, video capsule endoscopy.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Must hold or be eligible for full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of ability for career progression in gastroenterology following MRCP

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of minimum 2 years’ experience in Gastroenterology/Endoscopy at registrar level
  • Outpatient and inpatient experience in gastroenterology and hepatology at registrar level for a minimum period of 1 year
  • Competent in diagnostic gastroscopy (JAG certified or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of therapeutic Endoscopy techniques e.g. variceal banding
