This is a fixed term appointment for 12 months.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor to come and join the nephrology team at South Tees on a 12 month, fixed term basis.
As a Speciality Doctor in Renal Medicine, the post holder will be based at James Cook University Hospital. The job plan will be created according to individual learning needs. The post holder will work on the same rota as three Specialist Trainees and another permanent Specialty Doctor within the specialty.
Main duties of the job
The Renal Department at the James Cook University Hospital deals with all aspects of renal Medicine including AKI, CKD, pre dialysis care, early post-transplant care, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis with a growing home haemodialysis service. The unit comprises of a 24 bedded acute ward which includes an acute dialysis bay; a 20-station dialysis unit on site; and 4 satellite dialysis units. It provides outreach outpatient and inpatient services to 5 neighbouring hospitals.
Inpatient work involves dealing with complications in dialysis and transplant patients; investigation and treatment of acute nephrological problems; elective renal procedures; vascular access surgery and intervention; seeing referrals on other wards and a daily in-reach service to critical care. There is also a dedicated Day Unit open 5 days a week, run by a team of 11 specialist nurses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical – nephrology
Clinical experience and training are available in all aspects of nephrology except the care of patients at the time of transplantation and for the first two to three weeks thereafter. As well as supervising resident medical staff in the day-to-day management of renal inpatients, and attending an average of 2 mixed nephrology outpatient clinics per week (including outreach clinics). The Specialty Doctor will be expected to see patients with renal problems referred from other wards; attend regular ICU and HDU ward rounds with the consultant nephrologist; become fully competent in inserting temporary central venous lines using ultrasound guidance.
Clinical – acute medicine
If required, additional experience can be gained in acute medicine, principally through regular commitments to the acute medicine service and the Medical Assessment Unit, both in normal working hours and on evening and night shifts as part of the Trust’s award winning Hospital at Night scheme.

- • 24 months experience of general and specialty medicine, including renal medicine and acute medicine
- • Experience of clinical audit
- • Regular attendance at and participation in audit meetings
Qualifications

- • Working towards MRCP, FRCA or equivalent
- • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- • Full MRCP, FRCA or equivalent
