Job overview

The Orthodontic department at South Tees Hospital, based at the James Cook University Hospital site, is looking for a locum Specialty Dentist in Orthodontics.

This is fixed term appointment, initially for up to 9 months to cover maternity leave and recent retirements. Whilst the role is advertised as a full time position applications for reduced hours would be considered.

Main duties of the job

·  Assessment of new patients referred to the Orthodontic department from general dental practitioners and local Specialists.

·         To provide orthodontic treatment for patients who are eligible for treatment within the hospital department selected by the Consultant.

·  To provide the continuation of treatment of cases that were previously undergoing treatment with another clinician under the supervision of the Orthodontic Consultants

· To follow the treatment plans devised by the Consultant Orthodontist and any modification required must be done in conjunction with the relevant consultant.

·  To be competent in providing all aspects of contemporary orthodontic treatment and to be able to work independently. All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their activity to that which is deemed to be within their competence.

To provide treatment of orthodontic patients and will be responsible to the consultant orthodontists for all clinical duties.

·         Colleagues in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry.

·         Senior dental nurses and dental nurses in Orthodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

·         Orthodontic laboratory staff

Person specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • • BDS or equivalent primary dental qualification
  • • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
  • • Membership in Orthodontics of The Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
  • • Eligible for GDC specialist list in Orthodontics
Desirable criteria
  • • FDSRCS or MFDS or equivalent
  • • MSc in Orthodontics or other equivalent Masters level degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Three years full-time postgraduate orthodontic training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration
  • • Up to date with current practices in orthodontics
  • • Experienced in the use of removable, functional and straight wire appliances.

Teaching

Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of teaching / training undergraduate & postgraduate students
  • • Organisation of teaching / training events
  • • Good presentation skills

Audit

Essential criteria
  • • Evidence of involvement in clinical audit and an understanding of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
  • • Organised audit that has resulted in change

Research

Desirable criteria
  • • Understanding research principles and the relevance of the evidence basis for clinical practice
  • • Research experience or qualifications
  • • Publications and presentations
