Consultant Hand Surgeon

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

The main priority for this post will be to deliver the highest clinical standards in the practice of orthopaedic hand conditions. The post holder will contribute to the hand trauma rota and develop high quality research in trauma & elective orthopaedic hand surgery. The post holder will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1 – 2 years.

A new surgical hub has recently opened at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. This will provide an environment for high volume low complexity work of which hand surgery will be a part. The theatre complex has a block room to facilitate efficient use of regional anaesthesia for upper limb lists.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be joining the hand unit in a busy Major Trauma Centre. The hand unit at The James Cook University Hospital is staffed by orthopaedic and plastics hand surgeons. We run an integrated hand trauma on call rota on a 1 in 6 week on call basis. There is no orthopaedic general trauma commitment. The hand trauma clinics are split into virtual and face to face clinics and these feed into regular hand trauma lists. It would be expected that the new consultant would be involved in cross site working

The main priority for this post would be to deliver the highest clinical standards in general hand and wrist conditions but there will be an opportunity to develop a subspeciality interest if desired.

We run a regular multidisciplinary team meeting including surgeons, trainees and hand therapists allowing support and good clinical governance. The successful candidate will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1-2 years.

We have an academic unit with an excellent track record in surgical research. There are a number of ongoing trials in hand surgery

Working for our organisation

We support the 'Making Every Contact Count' approach to behaviour change in the promotion of health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
