This post offers an exciting opportunity to gain training and experience in the Trauma and Orthopaedics specialty and Medical Education. The aim of this post is to further develop and improve teaching of Undergraduate medical students within South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Applications are invited from registered medical practitioners for a Teaching Fellowship; the post holder will be jointly supervised by the surgery directorate and the Undergraduate Department. Close collaboration and flexible working between the departments is integral to the appointments, to balance clinical and teaching commitments. The post holder will be expected to contribute to work in the Orthopaedic Department and provide high quality care for patients. The post holder will be given the opportunity to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. The post is for 12 months and salary scale is the Locally Employed Doctors contract (2016).  Those wishing to apply who are working at a higher grade than MT03 CT 1/ 2 are welcome. Salary can be matched when provided with evidence of current pay slip one month prior to commencement of the post

Main duties of the job

The award of the Teaching Fellowship will allow the post-holder to deliver and develop undergraduate teaching at all levels at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites with a specific focus on Trauma and Orthopaedics. There will be a clinical component, which includes contributing to the junior grade on call rota in T&O and providing clinical care for the Orthopaedic wards. Clinic and theatre sessions are encouraged and negotiated by the post holder, considering their level of experience. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to mentoring and supervising medical students on a regular basis as well as contributing to end of stage examinations and in-course assessments.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clinical knowledge of a wide range of topics covered in the undergraduate medical curriculum
  • Knowledge of different teaching and learning methods
  • Knowledge of management of acutely unwell patients
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of common orthopaedic emergency presentations

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Medical Degree (MB BS or equivalent)
  • GMC registration with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • BSc or other intercalated degree
  • MRCS part 1
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 12 months working in NHS
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Evidence of audit experience
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience working in Trauma and Orthopaedics
  • Evidence of exposure to different groups/teaching methods
  • Teaching qualification(s)
  • Knowledge of a UK undergraduate curriculum
  • Experience of caring for surgical patients
  • Evidence of completed audit project
  • Information Technology skills
  • Experience of Clinical Risk Management
  • Experience of committee work
