Clinical Fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology Surgery

MT03 to MT05

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for the post holder to join a dedicated 6-member Gyn oncology fellow team to provide middle-grade clinical cover for inpatient care for patients in the ward or High Dependency Unit / Intensive Therapy Unit and also take part in outpatient clinics (joint oncology and pre-operative), Gynaecology MDT Clinics, and Gynaecological oncology theatres. They are also required to participate in the Gyn Oncology middle-grade on-call rota (outside normal working hours, non-resident cover) with occasional requirements (based on career stage) to cover the general gynaecology on-call rota.
This post will be suitable for registration and completion of the BIARGS Gynae Robotic surgeon training curriculum. Through our collaboration with Intuitive, the surgeon will also meet the Da Vinci Console Surgeon Training and Equivalency Certificate Requirements.

Main duties of the job

Surgical experience can be accrued within Gynaecological theatre sessions. This post will offer a comprehensive exposure to cutting edge surgery in gynaecological cancers including robotic, laparoscopic and open total and radical hysterectomy, open and robotic pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy, sentinel node sampling, pelvic exenteration, vulval excision and reconstructive surgery. Also, cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer is performed in The James Cook University Hospital which could include pelvic clearance with peritonectomy, bowel resection, diaphragm stripping as indicated.

The post holder is expected to provide inpatient care for patients in the ward or in High Dependency Unit / Intensive Therapy Unit, and also take part in outpatient clinics (joint oncology, colposcopy and pre-operative). They are required to take part in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology middle grade on call rota to protect on-call supplement (not during working hours so that day- time focus will be entirely towards gynaecological oncology).

Working for our organisation

The successful applicant will have the necessary support to undertake a research project and present at National and International meetings.

The candidate will be encouraged to join one of the research programmes - Masters in Gyn Oncology ( 180 CPD credits with Teesside University) or MD/PhD as OOPR, jointly with the Teesside University ( state of art facilities at the National Horizon Centre)  or Newcastle University. The course fees will require self-funding, but the research work will be funded from the relevant projects/departmental funding.  In addition, there will be opportunities to be involved in research programmes organised by the STRIVE ACeS facility at JCUH.

You are encouraged to visit the Unit.
