Job overview
The post holder will be a qualified nurse with an extensive nursing experience within the field of Hameaolotgy/Cancer nursing. They will have a record of career long learning and education and they will require highly developed leadership, interpersonal relationship, and communication skills.
The post holder will be expected to work in partnership with other organisations, professionals and specialties and refer on appropriately e.g. surgical and oncology colleagues, specialist palliative care, primary care and social services.
As the key worker the post holder will plan a systematic approach to assessing the management of patient care in consultation with the MDTs and other organisations to address the individual needs of and involving patients and their carer’s in disease management, whilst encouraging patient participation in care and service development
The role of the specialist Nurse is multifaceted incorporating such key functions as policy and standards development, education, research, and professional development. The ultimate aim is the provision of a cost effective, efficient quality service that meets the needs of the patient caseload/client group.
Main duties of the job
· Caring for patients with lymphoma, myeloma, leukaemia, MPN/MDS. At times there will be an expectation to also provide care, advice and support to those with non cancerous haematology problems such as iron deficiency anaemia and ITP.
• To provide senior clinical support and provide expert nursing advice for all staff caring for patients.
• The post holder will manage a caseload of patients and work to ensure patients receive expert nursing advice and care
• Conduct specialist Haematology clinics and where required support the Consultant Haematologist in specific clinics

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
- • NMC level 1 registration
- • Degree
- • Specialist qualification in cancer care/Chemotherapy competent
- • Teaching Qualification
- • Advanced communications skills course or willing to undertake
- • Clinical Skills qualification or willingness to undertake
- • Evidence of ability to work at a senior level.
- • Venepuncture
Desirable criteria
- Counselling course or certificate
- Teaching Certificate
- Masters degree or willingness to study to Masters level
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Essential criteria
- • Expert level of knowledge of Haematology/Oncology nursing
- • NMP or working towards
Desirable criteria
- Expert level of knowledge of Haematology/Oncology management and care of complex treatments.
- Haematology and/or Oncology Nursing experience
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Essential criteria
- • Demonstrates a positive image of the nursing profession
EXPERIENCE

- • Significant post registration experience
- • Substantial experience which should be at a senior grade within a Haematology/Oncology setting
- • Experience in managing change
