Job overview

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery treats all aspects of patients within this specialty and this post is an integral part of this. A population of approximately 400,000 is covered by the service leading to a varied and busy department workload. The specialty works closely with the adjacent departments of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Dermatology and Ophthalmology and shares the department with an active Orthodontic Unit.


Outpatient Services and Day Ward Activities
Most out-patient and day case activity takes place in a purpose-built and dedicated out-patient department on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site in Truro which incorporate out-patient waiting areas, consultants’ offices, secretarial and clerical area, examination and treatment rooms, and nurses’ office.


OMFS clinics occur on most days, as do Day Case General Anaesthesia sessions, together with Minor Oral Surgery under Local Anaesthesia and Local Anaesthesia with IV Sedation.

 
Inpatient Services
Inpatients are managed on an 18-bed adult ward (Wheal Coates) adjacent to the Head and Neck theatre together with an adjacent Paediatric ward. These ward areas are shared with Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Ophthalmology.


Out-patient clinics and theatre sessions are also held at West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance) in the west of the county in addition to a newly built surgical centre (SASH) at St Austell.

Main duties of the job

Management and treatment of patients encompassing full scope of practice in Oral surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial surgery through clinics, operating lists including trauma and on call duties.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery cases.

To share with colleagues' responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This includes on call duties.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME/CPD).

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.

To attend meetings as appropriate.

Fulfill duties of weekly timetable including any out-of-hours responsibilities (where applicable).

Access to named Educational Supervisor.

The post will involve at least six clinical sessions per week up to a maximum of ten. The clinical sessions will include MOS, IV Sedation lists, Daycase and Inpatient GA operating lists and out-patient clinics for new and follow-up patients. On call duties throughout the week including overnight in addition to 1:6 weekend on call for 48 hours.

Essential criteria
  • BDS
  • GDC Registration with a Full Licence to Practice

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous DCT1 post or equivalent
  • Teaching (Medical students, peers, MDT).
  • Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients and ensuring this is embedded in clinical practice.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior colleagues as appropriate
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates.
  • Experience of giving presentations
