Job overview

Do you want to be part of an innovative and proactive Long Covid MDT? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, fixed term band 6 SLT post working with the North Cumbria Long Covid MDT. Members of the MDT have taken part in national webinars/podcasts to highlight the highly original model of working in this new client group.

This post offers the opportunity for excellent multidisciplinary working in this new and developing field. The highly supportive MDT comprises respiratory physiotherapy, psychology, neuropsychology, Well Being Coaches and respiratory consultants. A bimonthly virtual MDT meeting allows discussion of complex cases and opportunities for CPD. A monthly joint ENT/SLT clinic has been developed, allowing video laryngeal endoscopy/FEES facilities for this client group.

You will be responsible for the assessment and ongoing treatment of the Long Covid SLT caseload in North Cumbria. You should have experience in dysphagia, dysphonia and, ideally, upper airway disorders. A working knowledge of acquired cognitive/language problems would be advantageous. Service delivery is flexible. There is a now a well-established model of telemedicine (using Attend Anywhere) which has been well received by this client group, who are often suffering from high levels of fatigue, but face to face clinics can be arranged as appropriate.

Supervision will be offered by the Band 7 voice specialist SLT who is currently working with the Long Covid MDT.”

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist assessment, management and treatment to patients with laryngeal (voice/chronic cough/persistent laryngeal symptoms), swallowing and/or language/cognitive difficulties arising from Long Covid/Covid pneumonia
  • To be responsible for a specialist Speech and Language Therapy Long Covid/Covid pneumonia caseload in a range of care settings – out patient, community, telemedicine.
  • To participate in the development and delivery of training and information packages for a wide range of professionals and carers working with Long Covid/Covid pneumonia patients.
  • To work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary framework to achieve integrated care for patients, including participation in fortnightly Long Covid MDT meeting.

  • • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • • Registered with HCPC.
  • • On-going membership with the RCSLT.
  • • Evidence of formal training/self-study/ specialist experience to post graduate level in dysphagia and dysphonia.
