An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Community Paediatric Consultant, working within the Community Paediatric team in Plymouth. The applicant would be joining a friendly, enthusiastic, and dynamic team of 3 Community Consultant Paediatricians, 2 Associate Specialists and 1 Specialty doctor working in Plymouth and its surrounding area, conducting clinical work predominantly in the Child Development Centre (CDC). The medical team is part of the wider multidisciplinary team co-located at the CDC and includes specialist nurses in neurodiversity, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, psychologists, as well as well-established bowel and bladder service and community children’s nursing teams all underpinned by a dedicated administrative team. Audiology clinics are also held within the building as are visiting genetics clinics and ophthalmology. We also enjoy excellent links with our acute paediatric colleagues with multiple opportunities for shared learning, and outstanding links with our local authority partners, allied agencies, and commissioning team.
Main duties of the job
• Provision with consultant colleagues of a service to the University Hospitals Plymouth, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
• Appropriate cover for urgent administrative duties for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
• Any responsibility that relates to a special interest which may be developed whilst with the service
• Professional supervision of other resident medical staff.
• Responsibilities for carrying out teaching of medical students and resident doctors and where appropriate non-medical colleagues and students
• Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes, and in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

• Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate.
• A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.

• The post-holder will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
• The post-holder will be required to participate in the annual appraisal process.
• The post-holder will be required to complete annual updates in mandatory training.
• Travel as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required but a planned and cost-effective approach will be expected.
• Any other duties that may be required from time to time.
• The post-holder must comply with all aspects of confidentiality, professional codes of conduct.
• The post holder will be expected to show the leadership skills of a senior clinician on a day to day basis.
• Although the initial job plan is not anticipated to include specific leadership or management roles, the post holder would be encouraged to pursue these over time as they wish.

Education, qualifications & special training
Essential criteria
- • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
- • Full GMC Registration. Entry on the GMC specialist registrar via CCT (proposed CCT dates must be within 6 months of interview)
- • Portfolio pathway (formerly CESR) must be on the specialist register at the point of application
Desirable criteria
- • Completed GRID training in community paediatrics and has the appropriate CCT
- • Epilepsy training PET 1,2,3
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- • Able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to Higher Specialist Paediatric Training
- • Experienced in clinical Audit and Clinical Governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients and ensuring this is embedded in clinical practice
- • Teaching (medical students, junior/resident doctors, peers and the MDT)
Desirable criteria
- • Experience working within the NHS
- • Experience of Children in Care work
APTITUDE & ABILITIES
Essential criteria
- • Significant clinical experience and training in community paediatrics providing strong clinical and personal credibility.
- • Experience and recognised training in Safeguarding. Experience in assessing, formulating opinions and report writing to support child protection and working with wider safeguarding teams.
- • Outstanding communication and people skills and ability to adapt style of communication depending on audience and situation, including communicating bad news
- • Conceptual and analytical skills
Desirable criteria
- • Knowledge and experience of social paediatrics
- • Specific experience or national accreditation in neuro-disability and epilepsy
- • Experience or nationally recognised training in court skills
- • Ability and experience in chairing multiagency meetings
