Specialty Doctor StR Higher in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST6-8)

Job overview

This Speciality Doctor replacement post is to work with colleagues to provide high-quality service in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS).  This post will be based in the Department of Dental Specialities and Maxillofacial Surgery in Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP).

This role provides an excellent opportunity to use and develop surgical and non-surgical skills. There will be on call commitment, which would include evening and weekend work with appropriate senior support. Our second on-call rota is shared between Derriford Hospital and Torbay Hospital.

We are offering contract of 10 PAs (Flexible, less than full-time with minimum 7PAs) plus on-call commitment. Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions are distributed between clinic (new patient and follow ups), local anaesthetic sessions, operating theatre sessions and patient administration. Due to the nature of care that we provide, the balance of these sessions may be adjusted, as capacity and demand fluctuate.  The post holder may be asked to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.

We would support the post holder’s development of their clinical and professional skills. Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) time is included in the job plan, to allow for this.

Main duties of the job

Provide care for in-patient OMFS adult and paediatric patients under the supervision of consultant colleagues

Provide assessment, treatment planning and review of patients in outpatient clinics

Provision of principally dentoalveolar surgery under day case general anaesthetic and local anaesthetic

Administrative work arising from clinical activity

Supervision, teaching and mentoring of DCTs/ F2s and other staff members

Participation in Audit, Research and Quality Improvement
