Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the busy and dynamic team working within the Sexual Health and Contraception Service at Weymouth. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Sexual Health Nurse to join our friendly forward thinking team working 37.5 hours per week on a permanent basis.

The role includes working in an integrated service in contraception and sexual health across our main hub in Weymouth, and occasionally our weekly clinics in Shaftesbury, Blandford and Bridport.  We offer a wide range of clinics and sexual health support such as Genito-Urinary Medicine/STI screening, HIV & PrEP clinics, LGBTQ+ support clinics, contraceptive clinics, Dorset Working Women's Project, Early Medical Termination Service and Target Outreach Support for young people and schools. You must be a car driver and have a full driving licence for this role.

The service is open Monday - Friday between 8am & 8pm and the post holder will be required to work various shifts between these times, with some degree of flexibility.

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive, efficient and evidence based service to patients attending for contraception and sexual health screening, treatment and advice. Nurses appropriately trained will assess, plan, undertake care and investigations and supply medications in a supportive and confidential environment, recognising when to refer. This will include the fitting, removal and change of subdermal implants and intrauterine contraceptive devices and to counsel for IUS & IUD methods.

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of. Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service are able to present a valid DBS certificate instead of requiring a new check.

Person specification

Knowledge, Skills and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing
  • Recognised qualification in sexual health, e.g. DFSRH, BASHH Intermediate or equivalent
  • STIF Intermediate
  • LoC SDIs
Desirable criteria
  • Cervical cytology competency
  • LoC IUTs
  • Ultrasound scanning experience

Job Specific Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience within specialty
  • Nurse led services/outreach clinics
  • To competently supply medication under a Patient Group Direction
  • Phlebotomy
  • Understanding of sexual health and national strategies
  • Knowledge of safeguarding principles
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the counselling of patients with STIs and /or HIV
  • Experience in partner notification
  • Microscopy

Managerial/Supervisory Experience

Essential criteria
  • Competent facilitator to students and junior staff
  • Able to manage others
