Preceptorship Midwife

Band 5 (Development to 6)

As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.

We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £250m estates programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.

We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming and productive place to work.

We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.

At UHD our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.

As a Trust we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.

Job overview

We would like to invite applications from newly qualified midwives to join our midwifery team at University Hospitals Dorset.  We will be running a Recruitment Day on (Provisional Date) Saturday 5th July 2025.  This is an opportunity for you to meet the team, have a tour of the unit and undertake some recruitment activities to include an interview.

Our Maternity Service provides a full range of midwifery care for families in East Dorset. The service delivers care to in excess of 4000 women per annum.   Join us at an exciting time at our new location in the newly built "BEACH Building".

As a preceptor programme midwife at UHD, you will be fully supported by the Practice Education Team for the 21 month preceptor programme. This will enable you to build up essential midwifery competencies in home birth, waterbirth skills, suturing , cannulation and care of high risk women.  You will have the opportunity to gain experience in all areas of the maternity service.

On completion of your probationary period you will move to midpoint band 5 and on completion of competencies and rotation, you will have a gateway conversation with a senior member of the team to be appointed as a band 6 midwife.

Main duties of the job

The service includes a high risk labour ward alongside dedicated operating theatres and high dependency rooms. The maternity service offers an alongside midwife led unit that has 6 ensuite delivery rooms, incorporating birthing pools. There is an on call home birth service for the delivery of care to women who wish to give birth at home. In addition, the service offers a traditional model of midwifery care with separate teams for the acute and community service.

Our Maternity services are regarded as a friendly place to work, with great team spirit and culture in all areas of the service.

The Maternity department is committed to education and development, and invests in an education team which supports learning and practice development across the department. Learning and development opportunities currently in place are as follows:

  • A 21 month preceptor programme for newly qualified midwives
  • Access to a Practice Development Midwife and Education Team
  • Live Team Skills Drills
  • Access to recognised post-registration qualifications in partnership with Bournemouth University
  • E-learning programmes
  • Post registration opportunities to study at degree, Masters and PhD level
  • Potential to progress through the career structure from Midwife Practitioner to Midwife Team Leader, Matron and Consultant Midwife and more

Please note that this vacancy may close early if there is a significant amount of interest.
