Job overview
An exciting opportunity has come available for an enthusiastic, motivated, Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Special Haematology section of Blood Sciences at University Hospitals Dorset. We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist who is experienced in Antenatal Screening, Haemoglobinopathy and HbA1C testing. They must be professional, reliable, innovative and flexible to join our friendly and hardworking team. The post is fixed term for maternity cover.
The Haematology department is part of the Blood Sciences department of University Hospitals Dorset. The post is currently based at Poole Hospital, but the successful candidate will be working at our laboratory in the Dorset Pathology Hub in Bournemouth. The Special Haematology service is moving from Poole to Bournemouth in a phased manner and the successful candidate will be expected to assist with verification and training amongst other tasks.
Ideally you will have experience with Tosoh G11 analysers and Winpath Enterprise.
The modern department offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Dorset Hospitals as well as local GP practices. The department is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
Main duties of the job
The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a BMS, have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology) or have equivalent proven experience at Band 6 level in Special Haematology. Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD) will be expected to be demonstrated at interview. Candidates completing their Specialist Portfolio may be considered however they would start on band 5 if unable to satisfy the Specialist BMS criteria.
About our team?
The Haematology department is well equipped, including 2 x G11 analyser for HbA1C analysis and 1 x G11 Thal mode. Electrophoresis is performed weekly.
The clinical Haematology department is internationally renowned as a centre of excellence for chronic blood disorders including chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Completed Accredited BSc in Biomedical Science
- Registration with HCPC.
- IBMS specialist portfolio or equivalent post graduate knowledge e.g. competency based evidence of specialist techniques
Desirable criteria
- MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent area of specialty
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience of working in routine haematology
- Demonstrable experience of working in antenatal screening / haemoglobinopathies
- Experience of working in a UKAS ISO 15189 and MHRA approved laboratory
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with Tosoh G11
Technical Skills Competencies
